Women in Construction – What HBA Member was Elected NAWIC Region 6 Director?

HBA member Debbie Speake (Springfield Electric) and HBA CEO Charlyce Ruth recently attended the NAWIC (National Association of Women In Construction) Region 6 Spring Forum.

DebbieSpeakeDuring the Forum, Debbie Speake was elected as the 2014-2016 Director for Region 6 and will be installed as director at the NAWIC national conference in September.

As the Region 6 director, Debbie will be traveling to NAWIC chapters in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and southern Illinois. In addition, she will represent the region at all national meetings.

During the awards banquet, the Springfield NAWIC chapter was recognized with three awards:

  • RampBuildWICWeekThe “Building a Ramp” project was recognized with two awards – the Construction Industry Community Benefit Award and Women In Construction Week – Best Community Service Project. The Springfield Chapter partnered with the Council of the Churches to construct a wheelchair accessible ramp for a woman who has a deliberating disease confining her to a wheelchair. Richard Virnig, director of Connections Handyman Service, an affiliate of Council of the Churches coordinated our efforts with a local General Contractor. A total of 7 NAWIC members and 1 guest worked together to complete the ramp. We met JW, the General Contractor, at the house and came up with a plan on how we were going to install the ramp.
  • The “Annual Construction A to Z Seminar” received one award – the Women In Construction Week – Best Education Event: The Annual Construction A to Z seminar is held to provide current and valuable information both to NAWIC members and others in the construction industry. This year’s seminar was condensed into a half day seminar to allow greater participation. This year’s speakers included Stephanie Ireland (Ireland Architects), Steve Ratliffe (Killian Construction), Anna Mathis CCA, CDS, CIT (Federal Construction) and Darrell Barr (SimplexGrinnell).
