Japanese Students visit Habitat for Humanity of Springfield, MO

Japanese Students visit Habitat for Humanity of Springfield, MO: students from Isesaki, Japan will volunteer to learn about environmental initiatives through the ReStore.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – More than 50 students from Isesaki, Japan will visit Habitat for Humanity of Springfield, MO (HFHS) to learn about environmental initiatives and how HFHS makes an impact through its recycling program. The Japanese students are participating in the 2015 Isesaki Global Leadership Academy and are travelling to Springfield, Missouri through the Sister Cities program. The students will be touring the HFHS recycling center and ReStore on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 from 1:00 -3:30 p.m. The HFHS recycling center is located at 2410 S. Scenic, Springfield, MO 65807.

While at the HFHS recycling center and ReStore, students will be focused on learning about different area resources and economic integration focused on issues include resource management, pollution, sustainable development and green initiatives. The students will tour the ReStore, help volunteer, and meet with staff members to discuss the things they’ve learned throughout the visit.

“The Habitat for Humanity ReStore is in the recycling business,” said Larry Peterson, executive director of HFHS. “The donations we receive are recycled from our patron’s homes, and we sell them to the next family. The process repeats itself constantly and funds the mission of our organization.”

The experiences these young leaders encounter during their week in Springfield will shape their perspectives for years to come. They will see first-hand how Habitat for Humanity of Springfield, MO confronts resources and economic integration issues, reflect on their experience, compare it to what they are familiar with in Japanese culture, and ultimately raise awareness of these issues and a few innovative approaches for dealing with them.
