I am pleased to share that we are making progress on the HBA of Greater Springfield / Habitat for Humanity Builders Circle project. Over the past week, the lots were officially marked out. And grading work should be completed by the end of this week. That means we are very close to being able to start the build!
As it looks at this moment, we will pull building permits on the 18th of July. I have contacted some fellow HBA members in the past week regarding participation in this exciting project, and have been able to start lining up the materials necessary for the project. As we get to the actual stages of construction where these materials are used, I will be diligent to report what materials are being used at each stage of the process, and which members’ generosity made that stage of the project possible. Thanks so much for your support!
Materials are critical to the build, but of course, so is labor. And now is the time that we need to start getting commitments for the labor side of the project. Our first major step will be the framing of the structures. So if you know how use a hammer and can pound nail, or can safely operate a power tool… or if you just want to carry lumber around – now is the time to let me know. Your help is definitely needed. Skilled labor is welcome, but this is a Habitat project – which means unskilled volunteer labor will also be put to good use. Just let me know of your willingness and we’ll find the right fit.
Our hope is to have a couple of framing crews committed and ready to work once we have the foundations poured. I am very flexible on this as far as what days of the week work best. For now I will leave that up to you, just contact me and let me know what works best and we will go from there. You can also let me know what other phases of the project you would like to be involved in, and I will schedule willing volunteers accordingly. I will also need people who are just willing to help shovel gravel once the footings are placed.
As always you can contact me either by phone, through this blog are by e-mail.
Again thanks you in advance for your help with this project. Eager to hear from you, as you consider how you can best help.
Thanks in advance,
Scott

In January 2011, the HBA of Greater Springfield announced it would partner with Habitat for Humanity of Springfield to build the first two homes in Habitat’s new Builders Circle development. The homes will be certified to the National Green Building Standard and their construction will serve as a demonstration of flexible and affordable methods by which construction professionals can build green in a residential setting.
Home builder Scott Kisling, himself a Certified Green Professional (CGP), is managing the project on behalf of the HBA. Here, Scott’s Builders Circle Project Blog helps keep HBA industry professionals and curious consumers up to date on the latest green building features being incorporated into the project. The blog also provides updates on the project’s latest progress and upcoming needs. Those who would like to help with the project are encouraged to leave their comments at the end of blog posts. Or, e-mail Scott directly to offer your assistance.
